Here at London Food Essentials, we can't sing our praises loudly enough about this fabulous food fortnight celebrating London's very own larder. For two-weeks, the city will showcase the best of its local produce from small scale London growers to producers and artisans with cafes and restaurants celebrating with a true cornucopia of events from pop-up dinners to foraging walks and botanical cocktail nights. Urban Food Awards are also a feature of this event. Londoners have the opportunity to vote for their favourite producer from the 80 or so enterprises that have entered this open award. You can vote here. Find out more about some of London's food producers
Off Hampstead’s busy high street, you’ll find one of NW3’s best kept secret, Meat, naturally. One of a handful of permanent stores of the Hampstead Community Market, this neighbourhood butcher specialises in organic and natural meat from British producers. With a commitment to 100% traceability, all meat is sourced from small farmers mainly from Gloucester and across the British Isles. Seasonal salt marsh lamb comes from a coastal farm near Caernardon Wales, where the sea washed fields of sea lavender, samphire, sorrel and thrift gives it a distinctive flavour. Scottish beef is matured on the bone for a minimum of 28 days and is sourced from a traditionally reared Aberdeen Angus and Hereford Cross breed- grass fed in the north-east of Scotland. Cuts are prepared to order. You’ll find the daily specials handwritten on a blackboard as well as farm-free eggs and a range of condiments. A home delivery service is available to those who live locally. With all the values of a traditional butcher, Meat, naturally is a wonderful find and a true local to this leafy village in London's NW3. Address: Hampstead Community Market, 78 Hampstead High Street, NW3. Open: Mon - Sat 09.00 - 17.00. Tel. 07596 45 45 38 or 0783228 90 15. Discover the great London larder
For this week's weekend inspiration, we go State-side as we've just arrived back from NYC. Union Square Market is one of our all time favourite markets not simply for the quality of produce on offer but its food philosophy. This truly inspirational farmers' market has been around since 1976 offering a harvest of produce from local farmers and food artisans. Among its many stalls, we sampled and discovered a bounty of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, fish and meats, farmstead cheeses, breads and jams, honey and maple syrup, wine and cider. The flagship market of Greenmarket, this is a market truly dedicated to supporting local farmers and bringing seasonal produce and educational food programmes to provide "all New Yorks with fresh healthy local and affordable produce".
Address: North and West sides of Union Square Park. To learn more about Greenmarket, its mission and markets across NY, click here Watch out for our forthcoming photo essay/ article in Food&_ on this market and some of the producers that make it so special. |
