Discover what every south-Londoner already knows- East Dulwich rivals its Shoreditch and Old Street cousins. With its chilled out neighbourhood vibe and street of delis, bars, and design stores, SE22 has all the charm of a country village but with an urban edge.
From East Dulwich station head directly towards Lordship Lane, looking for Goose Green as you go. This picturesque English green is summer perfect for a local cricket match or picnic and the starting point for your food walk down Lordship Lane. With a somewhat quirky left-handedness, most of the places to eat, drink, cook and ware are on this side of the street. Green Cuisine Cookshop (no.7) offers an early but perfect pit stop for those who love to bake. At no. 69 Cheese Block beckons with its fine selection of cheeses and close neighbour, wine specialist, Bossman Wines at no.79 is also worth a visit.
If you are here on a weekend, head to North Cross Street. On a Saturday morning, this sleepy street shakes off its week-long slumber and gets festive with a market of food and produce stores. While there visit Pretty Traditional (no.47), a fruit and vegetable store with an earnest heart and enticing range of fresh produce. Be sure to pay a visit to Miss Hope and Mr Greenwood of Hope & Greenwood Purveyors of Splendid Goods (no. 20) for some traditional sweets. Continue along North Road to find North Cross Vintage Store – this jumble of kitchenalia, furniture, jewellery and vintage wares always contains a treasure. Look out for the improvised sign pointing you to the Blue Brick Café at 14 Fellbrigg Road. It’s easy to spot – just look for the converted corner store with the blue bricks. Order your vegetarian or vegan brunch and enjoy the ambiance of this very neighbourly cafe. Take cash and a good appetite.
Back on Lordship Lane that extraordinary alchemist of perfumes and lifestyle products, Roullier White (no.25) awaits. Look for the Mrs White’s range inspired by the owner’s great grandmother, especially if you are in need of linen spray, cold cream or some travel fruit sweets. Closeby is Franklins Farm Shop (no.55) that brings a Home Counties feel to the heart of this village. Specialising in organic produce, shopping here is simply a delight. Across the road, William Rose (no.126) continues to earn a strong local following with its organic meats and game. If the mood takes you, continue towards Captured in the Rye – a home-wares and coffee shop hidden away behind a shopfront at 85 Pellatt Road.
Like any village, SE22 has its fair share of coming and goings. Lush Designs, a recent pop-up is open to 2 June 2012, and waiting to arrive is Toasted @toastdulwich (no.36-38).
