Another weekend; another great food adventure. Click on the image below to get your taste of one of London's most exciting food scenes - Maltby Street & Spa Terminus.
Ten london food walks- all I can say is that I have done my far share of walking over the last few months. So what better way to celebrate than with my top 10 foodie things to do in London. I have deliberately selected a place from each of my food walks to give you a true taste of London. Some of the names and places you'll recognise; others will take you off the tourist maps into the London of Londoners.
Spa Terminus, Bermondsey These renegade traders have been rocking the food boat since they picked up sticks and left Borough Market for cheaper rent. In the most unlikely of places – a light industry estate in the heartland of Bermondsey, you will find a unique community of food wholesalers and producers committed to quality food and the regeneration of this area of Bermondsey into a thriving food destination. Brixton Village, Brixton Head south of the Thames to experience the urban buzz of Brixton Village with its mix of pop-up restaurants, coffee brewers, ethnic food stores, cafes and restaurants – many of whom started their life as humble food bloggers. One of the best examples of the London food scene – the pulse is dynamic, innovative with a creative and irreverent edge, with lots of flavour. Lisboa Patissiere, Golborne Road London is one very expensive city - so it's hard to walk pass a food bargain when you see one. At Lisboa Patissiere, you can get yourself a fresh Portugese tart (nata) still warm from the oven and a coffee for £2.15. Come early on Saturday to sit among locals before heading off to explore the street markets of Golborne Road and nearby Portobello Road. 7 Golborne Rd W10 5NR Tel 020 8968 5242 Fortnum and Mason, St James There is more to this grand dame of food halls that her royal credentials and celebrated hampers. Long a champion of English foods, each month she hosts her own producers market. Meet the people behind the names like Rubies in the Rubble – chutneys made from London markets end-of-day produce and aptly named Norfolk Cordials made from you guessed it – Norfolk produce. 181 Piccadilly W1A 1ER Tel 0845 300 1707 Japanese Centre, Regent Street For some of the best sushi in London, visit the Japanese Centre. Expect a cafeteria experience with its self-service and long communal tables - but it's the selection and quality of the sushi that you go for. Visit the food store at the back for its great selection of Japanese ingredients, magazines, and kitchen gimmickry . 14-16 Regent St SW1Y 4PH Tel 020 3405 1152 Louis Patissiere, Hampstead Heath I’m not sure whether it's the old-fashioned service or the clientele but this long time resident of Hampstead never loses its appeal. Its patrons are as timeless as the décor – aging theatre actors, literary types, and gentile ladies that lunch. It is the perfect place to fortify yourself before walking the Heath. Ask to see the cakes: a selection will be brought to your table. 32 Heath Street NW3 6TE Tel 0207 435 9908 Coco Maya, Brompton Road Bring together two fashion creatives with a love of quality chocolate and what you get is Coco Maya. With its inspired design and playful cafes that flirt with all varieties of trompe l’oeil, your chocolate experience will be fully sensory, Try the salted caramel Cornish truffles or if you yearn for travel further afield then the Seville orange. 235 Brompton Road, London, SW3 2EP Tel. 020 3056 7558 Blue Brick Café, East Dulwich For a truly local experience, head to East Dulwich - in particular to the Blue Brick. In this converted corner-store hidden from the high street, you’ll find your perfect neighbour café. Grab a table outside, order your vegetarian breakfast, and enjoy the sunshine. 14 Fellbrigg Road SE22 9HH Tel 020 8299 8670 Folklore, Islington It’s not food but eco-home wares that you'll find at Folklore. Everything in the store is either made from organic, recycled or found materials. Its philosophy is that "better living is possible through design". We agree. 193 Upper Street N1 1RQ Tel 0207 3549333 Upper Tachbrook Street market, Pimlico And finally for your quintessential London experience, go to Upper Tachbrook Street market on a weekday. This is a true London market run by Londoners for Londoners. Maltby Street and its neighbour Spa Terminus are perhaps the place for food in London. Among the railway arches and housing estates of Bermondsey, you will find a burgeoning food scene of well-known names and innovative newcomers - all staunchly committed to good quality food .
This is a week of firsts with the publication of our first producer article and now u-tube video.
