Cast your prejudices aside, cross the Thames and discover East Dulwich. As all south Londoners know, SE22 with its chilled out neighbourhood vibe and street of delis, bars, design stores, and bakeries rivals the Shoreditchs and Old Streets of London. From East Dulwich station head directly towards Lordship Lane, looking for Goose Green as you go. This picturesque English green is summer perfect for a local cricket match or picnic and the starting point for your food walk down Lordship Lane.
With a somewhat quirky left-handedness, most of the places to eat, drink, cook and ware are on this side of the street. Green Cuisine Cook Shop offers an early but perfect pit stop for those who love to bake. Whilst East Dulwich Deli beckons with its fine selection of English and Italian produce. This contender for the London larder of my dreams is closely followed by the aptly named Cheese Block – right next door to wine specialist, Bossman Wines. If you are here on a weekend, head to North Cross Street. On a Saturday morning, this sleepy street shakes off its week-long slumber and gets festive with a market of food and produce stores. While there visit Pretty Traditional, a fruit and vegetable store with an earnest heart and enticing range of fresh produce. Be sure to pay a visit to Miss Hope and Mr Greenwood for some traditional sweets. Continue along North Road to find The Vintage Store – this jumble sale of kitchenalia, furniture, jewellery and vintage wares always contains a treasure. Look out for the improvised sign pointing you to the Blue Brick Café. It’s easy to spot – just look for the converted corner store with the blue bricks. Order your vegetarian or vegan brunch and enjoy the ambiance of this very neighbourly cafe. Take cash and a good appetite. Back on Lordship Lane, that extraordinary alchemist of perfumes and lifestyle products, Roullier White, awaits. Look for the Mrs White’s range inspired by the owner’s great grandmother, especially if you are in need of linen spray, cold cream or some travel fruit sweets. Closeby is Franklin’s Farm Store that brings a Home Counties feel to the heart of this village. Specialising in organic produce, shopping here is simply a delight. Across the road, William Rose continues to earn a strong local following with its organic specialised butchery. If the mood takes you, continue towards Captured in the Rye – a home wares and coffee shop hidden away in a shop front on Pellatt Road. Like any village, SW22 has its fair share of coming and goings. Lush designs, a recent pop-up is open to 2 June 2012, and waiting to arrive is Toasted @toastdulwich.
