Like most of London's East End, Clapton is in the throes of gentrification, no more so than on Chatsworth Road. Along this once neglected high street, you’ll find thriving new businesses and a vibrant café and coffee culture that is making it one of London's most talked about destinations. Like Shoreditch and Dalston before it, E5 is reinventing itself - transforming its urban landscape, revitalising its community, and promoting London's newest foodtrepreneurs. With a growing reputation for great eating, coffee and a Sunday market, Chatsworth Road is the ideal weekend destination - the perfect place for sartorial trend spotting and café hopping. For a truly local experience, start at NANA on Brooksby's Walk for its all-day comfort food (@wearenana). Housed in The Convenience (@TheConvenience), a converted public facilities building (that had been empty for 20 years), this social enterprise café run by local retired ladies and the bar and canteen upstairs typifies what you’ll find here in E5 - a creative and socially-aware reinvention of the urban landscape. Further along Creperie le monde (no.51) offers great road-side eating from a travel-inspired and infused crepe menu (@CreperieDuMonde ). At the far end of Chatsworth Road, the very-popular Cooper & Wolf (no. 145) leads the way with Scandinavian fare such as kottbullar (traditional Swedish meatballs and beetroot salad) and kanelbulle (cinnamon buns) (@cooperandwolf). Sunday is market day and it’s a natural hub for locals. The market itself is still growing, the result of a proactive community working with Hackney Council (@chatsworthroad). (In its heyday, it was home to a 200-stall market but stopped trading in the 1990s) A Kick Start scheme has recently been launched to encourage locals to test ideas through subsidised stall rents. Look out for Vegan Sweet Tooth (@roncato1976) and their moreish chilli and chocolate muffins as well as Hoxton Beach (@HoxtonBeach) for its London take on Middle Eastern street food. Don’t forget to go to the Sunday Morning Market – a few steps away at Rushmore Primary School. Here you’ll find an eclectic array of vintage finds, baked goods, plants and wares. New businesses continue to arrive on this burgeoning street such as Botany (no.5) - a must visit home-wares store with its attractive range of gardening wares, printed linens and cards (@botanyshope5). While there buy one of their flower bouquets featuring native botanicals made as you wait. For those interested in design, Triangle at no 92 has transformed a once derelict shop into an inviting store featuring mid-century glassware and furniture, home accessories such as hygge candles, local jewellery and design items (@store_triangle). Triangle is only open on the weekend and Fridays. At Furnish at no. 7 and Sanderson Sweeting Antiques at no.22, discover great vintage wares including kitchenalia like enamel flour bins and cooking scales. Firefly Books at home in a former bakery at no. 53 continues the theme of second hand wares. No visit to Chatsworth Road would be complete with a visit to London Borough of Jam (@LdnBoroughOfJam ). (It is just around the corner from the main street — look for the yellow wall with the painted shops sign.) Lillie O'Brien’s range of always seasonal jams and preserves are worth traveling for in their own right (fig and earl grey; amalfi lemon & vanilla; seville orange & chamomile) but in her store you also find St John custard doughnuts, London Herb Garden seeds, local craft beer as well as artisan chocolate by Williamsburg residents Mast Brothers and a line-up of must-have food magazines. Conclude your visit at Espresso Hut at no.46b Brooksby's Walk (just south of Chatsworth Road). This small, almost hole-in-the-wall cafe brews Square Mile coffee with a menu made with local Hackney artisan bread (E5 Bakehouse) and produce from Growing Communities.
